Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight days Jewish holiday that celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the Greek-Syrians in the Second Century BC. During Hanukkah, foods that are deep-fried in oil, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts), are eaten to commemorate the miracle of oil that lasted eight days. But there is much more to this unique holiday than that.
Other Traditional Hanukkah Foods
Hanukkah is celebrated with many other traditional foods like bimuelos, kugel and Levivot. Bimuelos are fried dough puffs that are usually filled with either honey or cinnamon. Kugel is a casserole-like dish made with egg noodles, cheese, and spices and usually topped with either potato or onion. Levivot, which is also known as potato pancakes, is served much like a Latke but with a sweeter taste.
Traditional Jewish Foods
Apart from the aforementioned Hanukkah foods, traditional Jewish foods are also eaten during the holiday such as Challah, Soup and Gefilte Fish. Challah is a sweet raisin-filled bread usually enjoyed on special occasions. Soup is usually a chicken or vegetable broth, usually served as a starter before a meal. Finally, gefilte fish is a dish made of ground fish, matzo meal, and spices that has been cooked and served with a sweet and sour sauce.
Modern Hanukkah Foods
Nowadays, many modern and creative dishes are being served on Hanukkah. These dishes include dishes such as Donut Burgers, Latkes with Gelatin Topping and Chocolate-Fried Macaroons. Donut Burgers are a mix of a hamburger patty between two sweet glazed donuts. Latkes with Gelatin Topping are delicious potato pancakes that are topped with a layer of flavored gelatin. Finally, Chocolate-Fried Macaroons are coconut macaroon cookies that are fried in oil and served with sweet chocolate sauce.
From traditional to modern, there are many delicious Hanukkah foods that can be enjoyed during the holiday. Enjoying these special treats is one of the most unique aspects of the Hanukkah celebration and it truly shows how diverse and special this holiday is.
