Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for 8 days and nights beginning on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. During Hanukkah, Jews around the world commemorate the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. It’s thought of as a time of hope, joy, and celebration, and is often symbolized with the lighting of the Menorah, a special candleholder with a candle for each of the 8 days. A big part of the celebration of Hanukkah is the eating of traditional food like potato pancakes, or latkes, and jelly-filled doughnuts, or sufganiyot.
Latkes
Latkes are made from potatoes, eggs, matzo meal or flour, and onions. They’re generally fried in oil, which symbolizes the miracle of the oil from the temple that lasted 8 days, but can also be cooked in an air fryer or oven. Latkes can be savory or sweet, with added ingredients such as herbs, sugar, and apples. Latkes are a staple of the Hanukkah meals and are often served with sour cream and applesauce.
Sufganiyot
Sufganiyot, or jelly-filled doughnuts, are considered a popular Hanukkah food because of their round shape that symbolizes the cycle of time. Sufganiyot are deep-fried and then filled with jelly or custard and topped with sugar. They’re often served with jams and preserves, or topped with cocoa sugar.
Other Foods
Aside from latkes and sufganiyot, other traditional Hanukkah foods include chremslach, matzo ball soup, kugel, and brisket. Chremslach are potato pancakes with herbs and spices, while matzo ball soup is a traditional Jewish dish of matzo balls cooked in a chicken or beef broth. Kugel is a casserole dish made with egg noodles and grated potatoes, and brisket is a slow-cooked cut of beef.
No matter what is served during Hanukkah, these traditional foods bring friends and family members together for an evening of celebrating and enjoying the foods of the season. Whether it’s latkes, sufganiyot, or any other traditional foods, the celebration of this holiday is definitely a time to indulge in delicious treats.
