Hanukkah is an important holiday in the Jewish faith, celebrated for eight days over the winter. While the holiday is generally associated with presents, lighting candles and spinning dreidels, it is also associated with traditional foods that have symbolic meaning. One of the more popular Hanukkah dishes is latkes, a fried potato pancake which symbolizes the miracle of oil that is at the center of the Hanukkah story.
On Hanukkah, Jews will also enjoy sufganiyot, fried potato doughnuts filled with jelly. This food serves as a reminder of the Greek conquest of Israel and the oppressions Jews endured at the time. In addition to latkes and sufganiyot, foods that are cooked in oil are commonly eaten during Hanukkah, such askugel.Kugel is a baked noodle pudding, often flavored with eggs or vegetables such as potatoes or carrots. Every family has their own diversity of kugel, however the traditional Ukrainian version consists of boiled egg noodles with grated potatoes, cottage cheese, sugar, and butter. Fruit kugels, consisting of a sweet noodle-dough-based phyllo crust with a fruit filling such as apples or plums, are also popular.
Other traditional Hanukkah foods include Ashkenazi delights such as tzimmes, a slow-cooked stew made of carrots, sweet potatoes, prunes, and honey. Yaprakes, or stuffed cabbage, is another traditional Ashkenazi Jewish dish that is commonly served for Hanukkah.
Foods that are a combination of dairy and meat are a rarity in the Jewish kitchen as the two cannot be mixed. However, Jews have found a way to find a compromise for Hanukkah as they serve ruganiyot. Raganiyot are small Israeli calzones usually stuffed with cheese and herbs.
For a sweet treat, Jews will usually eat hamantaschen, or “Haman’s pockets,” in honor of the villain in the story of Purim. The traditional triangle-shaped pastry is often filled with either fruit jam, poppyseeds, or chocolate.
Food is an integral part of Hanukkah and the Jewish faith. From fried potato latkes, to Ashkenazi stew, to sweet pastries, each dish represents a celebration of freedom and honor for those of the Jewish faith, as they commemorate the biblical story.
