Hanukkah is an eight-day festival that is celebrated by Jewish people all around the world, most commonly starting on the 25th day of the month of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar. While Hanukkah is a religious holiday, it is also celebrated with festive meals, games, and presents. One of the central and traditional elements of celebrating Hanukkah is the family dinner, which typically includes various traditional Jewish dishes.
The traditional Hanukkah dinner often starts out with a mug of mulled wine or a hot cup of tea, served with slices of a sufganiyah, a jelly-filled doughnut that is glazed with sugar. The main dish of the dinner is usually a potato latke, which is a kind of potato pancake, that is lightly fried in oil. The oil represents the miracle of Hanukkah and symbolises the oil that lasted for eight days.
The dinner also includes gehakte leber, which is a mixture of chopped liver and onions fried in oil, along with gefilte fish, which is ground whitefish mixed with eggs, matzo meal and crushed onions. Together with the fish, the usual accompaniments to the dinner include slices of beet, carrot and apples that have been pickled in sugar and vinegar.
For dessert, many people eat a traditional apple strudel, or a honey cake. The honey cake has many symbolic meanings in the Jewish culture – it symbolises the sweet times ahead and the hope of a better and sweeter future.
At the end of the meal, many people like to partake in a traditional Hanukkah game, such as spinning the dreidel or playing with a four-sided spinning top. This game helps to end the night on a joyous note and to bring everyone together.
No matter which customised dishes and traditions are used, the Hanukkah dinner is always a festive and meaningful time to come together and celebrate the holiday. From the traditional food to the festive entertainment, Hanukkah dinner is sure to bring lots of joy and laughter around the dinner table.
