Hanukkah is a special Jewish festival that celebrates the rededication of the temple after a group of Jews overthrew the Syrian government. As part of the festival, we light eight candles on a special menorah to commemorate the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days. Lighting the Chanukah candles is an important part of the celebration, so it’s important to do it correctly. Here is a guide on which way to light the Hanukkah candles.

Lighting the Hanukkah Candles
The Hanukkah menorah has nine slots, with eight of those slots representing the eight days of Chanukah. The ninth slot, known as the shammash, serves as the main candle used to light the other candles. The shammash is placed in the center of the menorah, or in some cases a bit higher.
The Right Way
When it comes to lighting the Hanukkah candles, there is one main rule that must be followed. Starting on the first night of Hanukkah, always light the candles from left to right. This should be done with the shammash, and it must be used to light the others. The candle furthest to the left is lit first, followed by the one to its immediate right. This pattern should be followed on all eight nights of Chanukah.
Smaller Menorahs
Smaller menorahs may only have seven candles instead of eight. In this case, the shammash should be the candle located in the center of the menorah. The candles should still be lit from left to right, still following the pattern described above.
Extra Candles
On the first night of Hanukkah, two candles are lit. This is done to represent the eight days of Chanukah being equal to 16. The first candle should be lit in the far left slot, followed by the far right slot. The remaining candles should be lit from left to right as indicated above.
When celebrating Hanukkah, the proper way to light the Hanukkah candles is from left to right. This should be done with the shammash, which should be used to light the other candles. Smaller menorahs should also follow this pattern, but with two candles being lit on the first night. Following this guide is an important part of correctly celebrating Hanukkah.
