Hanukkah is one of the most beloved Jewish holidays and celebrating it includes the lighting of special candles for eight days and nights. The order of how to light the Hanukkah candles is an important part of the holiday ritual and the actual lighting of the candles is a significant part of the celebration.
The lighting procedure consists of reciting blessings and prayers, as well as the placement and order of how to light the Hanukkah candles. The traditional Hanukkah menorah holds eight lights and is used to light the candles according to the prescribed manner. The Blessings and Prayers
Before the lighting takes place, two blessings are recited: the first blessing is thanking God for commanding us to kindle the Hanukkah lights; the second is thanking God for performing miracles for our ancestors in those days of long ago. After the two blessings, a third prayer is added on the first night, which is thanking God for redeeming us.
The Lighting Procedure
On the first night of Hanukkah, one candle is placed in the centermost branch of the Hanukkah menorah. The person lighting the candles then lights the candle from a pre-existing flame, and all other candles will be lit from this one candle for the whole holiday. The other seven candles are placed to the right of the first candle, starting with the first candle nearest the center. Every night, an additional candle is lit from the already lit candles starting with the second candle on the right (i.e. the first night only one candle is lit, and on the final night of Hanukkah all eight will be lit). It is important to light the candles from right to left directions, even when adding a new Hanukkah candle each night.
A Brief Summary of the Lighting Procedure
- On the first night of Hanukkah, light the centermost candle of the menorah.
- Starting with the first candle, to the right of the centermost one, light the additional candle each night.
- Light from right to left.
The lighting of the Hanukkah candles is a cherished ritual. Following the prescribed order of lighting is one way of remembering the holy Maccabee days and how God performed miracles for our ancestors. Lighting is a joyful act that celebrates the hope and light of Hanukkah.
