Hanukkah is a holiday filled with religious customs and traditions, many of which involve the lighting of candles. Centuries-old folklore has it that the eight-night Hanukkah celebration centers around the lighting of the menorah and the placement of the candles in a certain order. But which order do you light Hanukkah candles?
According to Jewish law, one candle should be lit on the first night of Hanukkah, two candles on the second night, three on the third night, and so on. On each night of Hanukkah, the newest candle is always lit first. This process is called Hadlakat Nerot. The candles are lit from right to left, with one additional candle used for the “shamash,” or “helping” candle, which is used to light the other candles. This shamash candle is usually placed in the center or on one end of the menorah, so as not to be confused with the other candles. The menorah should also be placed in a visible place in the home, so that all those nearby may witness the ritual. There is an ancient and traditional blessing which is recited before lighting the candles. Once the blessing has been said, the shamash candle is first lit, and then used to light the other candles. The candles are then left to burn for approximately 30 minutes. After these 30 minutes, the shamash candle will typically be re-lit in honour of the miracle that occurred during the festival.
It is important to note that the Hanukkah candles should never be used for any other purposes than the celebration of this festive holiday. Every night of Hanukkah, praying Jews say the Ma’oz Tsur song and discuss the miracles that Hanukkah commemorates.
Hanukkah is a special holiday for observant Jews, as well as those who are less traditional in their practices. The lighting of the menorah each night of Hanukkah is a time-honored custom, and the proper order of lighting each candle is an important detail in a meaningful celebration. Traditionally, the candles are lit from right to left, with the shamash candle used to light them. With this knowledge and a spirit of reverence, even those less familiarized in Hanukkah customs can join in this special celebration.
