Lighting Hanukkah candles is a special tradition that is full of symbolism and joy. While there are a few different ways of going about it, there are some general rules and rituals that you should follow when lighting your Hanukkah candles. The lighting of the Hanukkah candles is not just a religious practice, but an integral part of the Jewish culture and something to be enjoyed and celebrated.
Lighting the Menorah
The first step in lighting the Hanukkah candles is to fill the menorah (also known as a Hanukiah) with enough oil to last through all eight days of Hanukkah. The shamash (also known as the helper candle) should be placed in the middle of the menorah and is used to light the other candles. On the first night of Hanukkah, the shamash is lit, and then used to light the candle nearest to it on the right, followed by the second, third, and so on until all candles are lit from right to left. On the second night of Hanukkah, you begin with the shamash, and then use that to light the candle left of it. Subsequent nights follow the same pattern.
Blessings
Before lighting the candles, those present at the lighting should recite the blessings. The first two blessings should be said before kindling, and then a third blessing should be said afterwards. After that, the Hanukkah prayer should be said, thanking God for the young Maccabees’ and their mother Yehudit’s bravery in restoring the temple.
Keeping the Flame Alive
During the evenings of Hanukkah, the candles should be left burning until at least half an hour after dark – in order to keep the light of Hanukkah shining. If you are unable to, it is best to not light the candles at all.
Symbolism
The Hanukkah lights represent remembrance and hope for the nation of Israel. The light of the Hanukkah candles reminds us of the courage and dedication to our faith and reminds us of how many miracles God has given us throughout our history.
Lighting the Hanukkah candles is a great time to spend with family and friends – both to celebrate and remember. The meaning behind the menorah, the blessings and the menorah’s dancing flame all show us the beauty and power of Jewish faith and the joy of the season of Hanukkah.
