How Many Candles Do You Light The First Night Of Hanukkah?
When the menorah, or Hanukkah candle holder, is lit up for the first night of Hanukkah, one candle is lit on the far right. This is the Shamash (helper) candle and it is used to light all of the other candles for the evening. It is not counted as part of the eight lights and is typically placed in the middle of the menorah. On the first night, one candle is lit – the candle on the far right side of the menorah.
