Lighting the menorah is a vital part of Hanukkah, one of the most important Jewish holidays that celebrates the eight-day remembrance of the Maccabees’ successful revolt. The Hanukkah Candle-Lighting Blessing
Before lighting the candles for Hanukkah you must recite the candle-lighting blessing. The blessing for Hanukkah is:
- Baruch ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech haolam, asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Chanukah.
Translated into English, the blessing is:
- Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who sanctified us by His mitzvot, and commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah lights.
Once you have said the blessing, you may light the menorah.
Which Way Do You Light The Candles For Hanukkah?
Hanukkah lighting is done left to right on the menorah. The same is true for the first night as well as the rest. Therefore, begin with the far right candle (“shamash”) and the next one should be the second candle from your right hand side. Continue this way until all the candles are lit. For each night, one candle is lit until all eight candles are lit together.
Traditionally, the menorah is placed at a window and facing the street so that the joy of Hanukkah can be shared with others. Lighting the menorah is an integral part of the Hanukkah celebration and remembering the symbol of hope.
