About Hanukkah
Hanukkah is an important event in the Jewish calendar. It celebrates the rededication of the second Temple in Jerusalem, which took place in the year 165 BCE. Hanukkah lasts eight days, during which time the lighting of a special menorah (or candle holder) is observed.
The kindling of the 9-branched Menorah has become one of the best-known symbols of Hanukkah. The Menorah is lit for each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, with one extra candle, known as the Shamash, used to light the others. Traditionally, the Menorah is placed in a window facing the street so that passersby can see the lights, as a sign of the joy of the holiday.
The first night of Hanukkah is also marked by the recitation of the prayers, including the Shehecheyanu, a prayer celebrating moments of joy, and the Haneiros Halalu, which praises God for commanding us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah. Additionally, special melodies are sung, including the popular Maoz Tsur (Rock of Ages) and Hanukkah Oh Hanukkah.
During Hanukkah, special foods are enjoyed, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and jelly donuts (Sufganiyot), both fried in oil to commemorate the miracle of the oil. Hanukkah gelt (a play on the Yiddish term gelt meaning coins) is also given to children during this time–traditionally coins, although it is more common to find chocolate coins.
