Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of rededication, is celebrated for eight nights and days to commemorate the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 BCE. During this celebration, people light candles, exchange gifts, and share traditional treats. Although the holiday has ancient roots, the more modern celebration dates from the late 19th century.

The Menorah and Lighting of Candles
The eight-branched menorah is the most recognizable symbol of Hanukkah. On each night of Hanukkah, an additional candle is lit to mark the progress of the festival, beginning with one on the first night. The menorah is traditionally lit with a special candle with four wicks known as the “Shamash,” or helper candle. This candle is used to light the other eight candles. Each night of Hanukkah, the newest candle is lit first and prayers and blessings are said.
Gifts and Treats
The celebration of Hanukkah includes exchanging of gifts, such as Hanukkah gelt (coins or money). Other common gifts include books, toys, and other items related to the holiday. Many families also exchange Hanukkah cards. Foods associated with Hanukkah include latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts), and other fried foods.
Games
Games were an important part of life in ancient Israel, and remain an integral part of the Hanukkah celebration. The most popular game is Dreidel, a spinning top game. The four sides of the dreidel each feature a letter of the Hebrew alphabet that make the acronym for “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham” (A great miracle happened there). Players spin the dreidel and take turns guessing which side it will land on, and how much they will win. Other popular Hanukkah games include bingo and various card games.
Music and Dancing
Hanukkah celebrations include singing and dancing, both traditional and modern. Some of the more popular Hanukkah songs include “Maoz Tzur” (Rock of Ages) and “Mi Y’Malei Rachamim” (Grant Us Mercy). Dances include the “Circle Dance,” the “Chanukah Hop,” and the “Rockets Dance.”
Hanukkah is a special holiday filled with traditions, symbols, and activities that bring families and friends together with joy and celebration. Lighting the menorah and exchanging gifts are just a few of the many ways Hanukkah is celebrated and commemorated. From the dreidel game to the delicious food to the music and dancing, anyone can join in on the festivities of this important holiday.
