Hanukkah, sometimes referred to as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that celebrates freedom and hope. During Hanukkah, a menorah is lit each night to commemorate a miraculous liberation from anti-Jewish suppression. In 2021, Hanukkah will be celebrated from Thursday, December 10th to Friday, December 18th.
When Is Hanukkah Celebrated?
Hanukkah is a Jewish winter festival that is celebrated in the month of Kislev, in the Jewish calendar. Kislev usually falls between the end of November and the end of December. In 2021, Hanukkah will begin on the evening of Thursday, December 10th and end on Friday, December 18th.
Hanukkah Practices
On each of the 8 nights of Hanukkah, a candle is lit in the Hanukkah Menorah (candelabra). These candles are traditionally lit from the left side of the menorah to the right side. Hanukkah blessings are then said, and are usually followed by festive family meals and the traditional game of dreidel.
Hanukkah is a time to celebrate freedom and the Jewish people’s commitment to never give up hope. On each of the 8 days of Hanukkah, Jews around the world will come together to remember the miraculous victory of the Maccabees, and to celebrate the perseverance of the Jewish people.
Modern Hanukkah Customs
In addition to the traditional blessings and activities, many modern Hanukkah customs have been developed. These include consuming oil-fried foods like latkes and sufganiot, exchanging gifts, lighting the Hanukkah candles, and displaying a menorah.
One popular custom is the exchange of small, wrapped presents on each night of Hanukkah. Some people follow the tradition of receiving a gift of money each night from parents or grandparents. Others prefer modern gifts, such as books, puzzles, or sports equipment.
Hanukkah is a powerful reminder of the power of perseverance and hope in the face of insurmountable obstacles. While Hanukkah has developed many modern-day customs, the festival’s core values remain just as meaningful today as they were more than 2000 years ago.
During Hanukkah, Jews around the world come together to celebrate the ancient miracle of the oil and re-affirm their commitment to their faith and their community.
