Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday and festival celebrated for eight days and nights. It commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. It is a major holiday, celebrated annually in Jewish communities worldwide, which includes religious observances, festive family gatherings, traditional foods, gift-giving, singing, and performances.
Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, is the Jewish holiday that is celebrated for eight days and nights. The holiday begins on the 25th night of Kislev, which is the ninth month of the Jewish calendar and usually falls in December. The eight days of Hanukkah commemorate the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after the victorious Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. This rededication is also known as the “Miracle of Lights.”
The Maccabees recaptured the Holy Temple and lit the menorah which was found inside with only one vial of pure and undefiled oil. To their amazement, the oil, which should have burned out in one day, instead lasted for all eight days of the holiday. For this reason, Hanukkah is also known as the “Festival of Lights.” During each of the eight days of Hanukkah, Jews celebrate by lighting one candle for each day on a special menorah, beginning with eight candles and steadily reducing the amount over the course of the holiday as one candle burns down until the eighth day. Jews also recite special prayers, exchange gifts, eat traditional fried foods, and play games with the dreidel.
Hanukkah is a time for coming together to celebrate the miracle of the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem as well as to remember that no matter how dark and bleak life may seem, the light of hope will always be with us. Hanukkah is an important part of Jewish life, and is celebrated in Jewish homes and communities around the world for eight days and nights. The festival of lights is a time for families, friends, and neighbors to gather and remember the important moments in their shared history as well as to seize the opportunity for joy and for giving back to their community.
