Hanukkah or the Festival of Lights is one of the most celebrated Jewish holidays in the world. In Israel, Hanukkah is a very important holiday that has been celebrated for centuries and is no less celebrated today. Every year, people of all faiths come together to celebrate this joyous holiday that marks the defeat of the Syrian-Greeks by the Maccabees in the revolt of 167 BCE.
The celebration of Hanukkah in Israel begins on the eve of the 25th day of the month of Kislev – which usually falls anywhere between late November and late December – and lasts for eight days. During the eight days of Hanukkah, traditional Jewish foods, decoration, songs, and activities are shared with family and friends. The key symbol of Hanukkah is the menorah, a nine-branched candelabra lit with wax or olive oil candles. On the first night only one candle is lit from right to left and each night, an additional candle is added.
The highlight of the celebration is the lighting of the menorah in the synagogue or the home. Traditionally, each family member lights its own menorah with the candles, representing the eight days of miracle and the one additional candle for the shamash (the helper) candle. Depending on the tradition followed, some pray in front of the menorah or recite a special blessing after the holiday prayer, before the menorah is lit.
Hanukkah is also a time to enjoy fresh fried foods, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (doughnuts), which are often shaped like a star of David. During this time, children also receive gifts of chocolate coins (known in Hebrew as gelt) or even small presents. dreidel (a four sided spinning top) games are also very popular.
Israel is a bustling and energetic place during the eight days of Hanukkah, as it not only unites Jews of all backgrounds, but creates a sense of festivity throughout the country in the spirit of the season. Hanukkah is celebrated by decorating with lights, exchanging gifts, enjoying healthy outdoor activities, visiting famous places, creating traditional meals with family, and last but not least, sharing the joy with friends. Being present in the country during the Festival of Lights is truly a unique experience.
This joyous and cherished holiday is a celebration of will, resistance, courage, and unity. Hanukkah is the embodiment of miracles, family, and the vibrant spirit of Jewish people. In Israel, it is celebrated with a great deal of enthusiasm and joy and will always remain in the hearts of its inhabitants.
