Hanukkah is an 8-day festival celebrated by Jewish people from the 25th day of Kislev to the 2nd of Tevet of the Hebrew calendar. During the festival, many special customs and traditions are practiced each day, and special foods are served to bring the family closer together. In this article, I will explain what happens on Hanukkah.
The first day of Hanukkah marks the beginning of the 8-day festival. On this day a special lighting of the menorah is done, which serves to commemorate the miracle of the menorah in the ancient temple. Each night of Hanukkah, the candles are lit in the menorah in the opposite direction from which they are lit on the night before. On the first night, one candle is lit, and then an additional candle is lit each night until on the final night, all eight candles are lit. As the candles are lit, special prayers and songs are sung, and traditional Hanukkah foods are eaten.
In addition to the lighting of the menorah, some families observe the custom of playing a game called ‘dreidel’. Each player takes turns spinning a four-sided top and answering questions according to the outcome of the spin. The questions usually involve Jewish history or customs, but other questions can also be used.
Hanukkah also involves the giving of gifts. Children usually receive new toys, books, and games. Hanukkah gelt—a special chocolate coins—are also traditionally given to children.
Hanukkah is a special time for Jewish people of all ages to celebrate and come together with family and friends. The lighting of the menorah and the reciting of the traditional prayers are a reminder of the miracle that started this holiday. The playing of the dreidel, the giving of gifts, and the eating of traditional Hanukkah foods create a festive atmosphere among friends and family, making this holiday a time of joy and celebration.
