Lighting The Menorah
The ritual of lighting the Menorah is a special Hanukkah tradition that is associated with the miracle of the oil. On the first night of Hanukkah, the menorah should be lit with all the candles that will be used for the holiday. To start the lighting process, the “shamash” – the helper/servant candle – is lit first. Starting from the right side of the actual Menorah, the 2nd candle is lit and the recitation of the appropriate blessings commence. This process is repeated every night for the 8 nights, moving left to right each time.
Dreidel
The traditional spinning top game is an everlasting classic on Hanukkah. On the first night of the holiday, it’s always exciting to pull out the Dreidel for the family and friends. Just make sure to have enough coins or “gelt” handy for everyone! Special chocolate coins or gelt are available for Hanukkah as a fun treat.
Potato Pancakes
In Israel, it is traditional to eat “latkes” (potato pancakes) on Hanukkah. While it is not customary to eat them on other nights, they are a huge favorite on the first night of the holiday. Alongside the pancakes, applesauce and sour cream are usually served as an accompaniment.
Gift Giving
Gift giving is traditionally practiced on the first night of Hanukkah. It is customary to give gifts of money or food, such as nuts, chocolate coins or candy. Toys are also given to children on the first night, and can be presented to young and old alike.
Whatever happens on the first night of Hanukkah, make sure it is about making special memories and having a meaningful celebration. From the special blessings to the special treats, it’s a magical time to share with family and friends. Happy Hanukkah!
