Hanukkah is a great time of the year for many people all around the world. A time to celebrate the Jewish faith and the miracle of a single jug of oil lasting for 8 days. But one of the main attractions of the holiday is the fun and games that go along with the celebration. Here we’ll explore what types of games can be played for this special occasion.
Table of Contents
Dreidel
The most popular and traditional game that is played on Hanukkah is Dreidel. The game is played with a four sided spinning top – much like a spinning top, but with four sides each with a different Hebrew letter: Nun, Gimmel, Hey and Shin. Players each put an object (any small object like a coin) into the spin pot in the center. On each turn the player spins the Dreidel and whatever letter the Dreidel lands on they are either given from the pot or must give to the pot depending on which letter is spun. The game is concluded when all coins have been taken from the pot.
A Few Variations on the Dreidel Game
- Card Dreidel – Different from the conventional Dreidel game, players are dealt 7 cards each. They each antes 3 cards into the pot and take turns spinning the Dreidel and either taking from or placing into the pot.
- Spoon Dreidel – To play this game each player is given a spoon which they place in their mouth. The player must then spin the dreidel with the spoon in their mouth. Whoever is still holding the spoon in their mouth by the time the spinning stops gets to take from the pot.
Guess the Candle
Another popular Hanukkah game is to guess which candle has been lit. Each player has a paper and pencil. As each candle is lit they must try to guess which one has been lit and write down their guesses. If they guess correctly they get a prize.
Expert Level: Memory Match
A great variation on the traditional game of memory match is to play with Hanukkah-themed cards like dreidels, coins, candles, menorah etc. Cards are laid down in a grid and each player takes turns flipping over two cards looking for a matching pair. The player with the most matching pairs at the end wins the game.
Hanukkah is an exciting time of year for people of the Jewish faith. Along with the delicious dishes, fun activities, and religious customs, Hanukkah is also a great time to have some gaming fun with family and friends. From classic Dreidel to Guess the Candle, and even Memory Match for the more experienced players, there are many games to be enjoyed during Hanukkah.
