Hanukkah is a special holiday, celebrated by Jews around the world for centuries, that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. During this eight-day Festival of Lights, Jews share gifts with their loved ones to spread joy. So, what kind of gifts do you give for Hanukkah?
The traditional Hanukkah gift is money. Jews give to their family, friends, and any other members of their close community. This gift can also be called Chanukah Gelt, which is a Yiddish term for money. In the past, gelt was mainly coins, but today it is more common to give paper money notes.

Dreidel
What is a dreidel?
A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top with Hebrew letters inscribed on each side. It is a much-beloved children’s toy during Hanukkah. Each side of the dreidel has a letter from the Hebrew alphabet: nun, gimmel, hay, and shin, which are the first letters of the phrase “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham” (A great miracle happened there).
What do we do with it?
A dreidel is usually played with coins, nuts, or Gelt (Hanukkah money). Players will each take a turn spinning the dreidel, and depending on which letter it lands on, the player gets or loses Gelt.
Other gifts typically given on Hanukkah include books, music, crafts, clothing, and Judaica items such as menorahs, kiddush cups, and hanukkiot (candleholders).
Food is always a fun gift to give on Hanukkah!
Traditional Hanukkah Foods
Many traditional foods are eaten during Hanukkah such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts). These foods are often fried in oil to commemorate the miracle of a few drops of oil lasting for 8 days in the Temple.
Kosher Treats
Kosher treats are a fun and easy way to show your friends and family how much you care. It can range from gourmet chocolate bars, to jelly beans, to cookies and candies.
In order to make your Hanukkah extra special, it is not only important to give thoughtful gifts to your beloved ones, but also to keep in mind what holds special meaning to them. Whether you choose to give them something traditional, such as Gelt or a dreidel, or something a bit more creative, like Kosher treats, make sure it reflects the special bond and connection between you.
Happy Hanukkah!
