Hanukkah is perhaps best known for its food and traditions, but no holiday is complete without a few games! For centuries, Jewish families have spent time together playing a variety of Hanukkah-themed games. From board games to physical activities, there’s something to entertain all ages. Here’s a look at some of the most popular Hanukkah games.

Spin the Dreidel
Spin the Dreidel is a classic Hanukkah game. Each player receives an equal amount of gelt (coins, usually chocolate coins) and takes turns spinning the dreidel. Depending on the pattern it lands on, players either receive more gelt from the “pot” or must put in gelt to the “pot”.
How to Play
- Nun – nothing happens; the turn passes to the next person
- Gimel – the spinner takes all the coins in the pot
- Hey – the spinner takes half of the coins in the pot
- Shin – the spinner adds one coin to the pot
The game is won when just one player has all the coins.
Dreidel Races
Dreidel Races add a little physical activity and friendly competition to the standard Dreidel game. Instead of spinning one’s dreidel to see who receives the prize, racers will sit at opposite sides of a table. All players must then spin their dreidels at the same time, and the winner is the first person to make it across the finish line.
How to Play
- Players sit at opposite sides of a table
- Each player will have their own dreidel
- One player starts by spinning their dreidel
- The winner is the first person to have their dreidel across the finish line
- If someone lands on a Nun, the dreidel goes back to where it came from and they have to start again
Latke Flip
Latke Flip is a great way to test your kids’ physical dexterity and aim. It can also be a good way to teach the importance of healthy eating. Players take turns flipping a latke (potato pancake) to see who can land theirs closest to a target.
How to Play
- Each player stands behind a designated line about 10 feet away from the target (which can be as simple as a bowl)
- All players take turns flipping their latkes
- The player whose latke lands closest to the target wins
There are plenty of fun activities to keep everyone entertained during the Festival of Lights! From classic board games to more active activities, there’s something for people of all ages to enjoy. Whether you play Dreidel or Latke Flip, these games are sure to make your Hanukkah celebrations even more special.
