Hanukkah, commonly referred to as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most popular Jewish holidays, and it is celebrated for eight days and nights. From the lighting of the Menorah to the eating of potato latkes, the traditional practices of Hanukkah are well known. But what about the music? During Hanukkah, special songs and melodies are also played, and many of them have been around since the days of King David.
Songs Sung During Hanukkah
The most popular song played during Hanukkah is called Ma’oz Tzur (Rock of Ages). This song dates back to the times of the Talmud and is traditionally sung at the conclusion of the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah. Ma’oz Tzur is full of symbolism, as it talks about the many moments of Israeli history when God saved the Jews from peril. It also talks about the power of faith, as it asks God to “redeem us, speedily, only in our day”.
Other songs sung during Hanukkah include Maoz Hayyim (Rock of Life), Mizmor Shir Chanukat Habayit (Song of the Dedication of the House), and Siman tov, u’mazel tov (Good Sign, Good Fortune). These songs are also full of symbolism and history. Maoz Hayyim talks about the power of faith in the face of danger, Mizmor Shir Chanukat Habayit celebrates the rededication of the Temple after it was defiled during the Maccabean revolt, and Siman tov, u’mazel tov is a traditional Jewish song of joy and celebration.
Instrumental Music
Besides traditional songs, instrumental music is also a part of Hanukkah celebrations. A typical Hanukkah concert might include a Hora medley, with traditional Jewish music used to dance in the circles. Another popular tune is the Haneirot Halalu Medley, which is a medley of variations of the traditional Hanukkah song.
For a bit of fun, many orchestras play a Klezmer medley as part of the Hanukkah concert. Klezmer music is a traditional Eastern European-style of music and the medley usually includes traditional tunes and popular songs.
Modern Hanukkah Music
The last 2 decades have seen the emergence of modern Hanukkah music, such as Adam Sandler’s Dreidel Song and Dave Koz’s This Gift. These songs have become popular in their own way, as they bring a modern twist to the traditional Hanukkah music.
Whether it’s the traditional songs of old or the modern songs of today, music can play an important role in the Hanukkah celebration. As the music is being played, Jews the world over are reminded of their place in Jewish history and faith. With music, the light and joy of Hanukkah can be shared with friends and family, and can serve as a reminder of the miracle of Chanukah for many years to come.
