The Hanukkah menorah, or Chanukiah, is an eight-branched lighting fixture used during the eight-day Jewish celebration of Hanukkah. This traditional holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem as well as the miracle of the oil that kept a flame for eight nights. Lighting a menorah is a symbolic gesture meant to evoke feelings of awe and joy for the holiday. If you are looking to use a Hanukkah menorah this year, here is how to do it.
Table of Contents
Gather and Prepare the Necessary Items:
- Hanukkah menorah (with a minimum of 8 holders for the candles or oil)
- Hanukkah candles or oil
- Candle-lighting shammash (helpful but not necessary)
Positioning the Menorah:
The menorah should be placed on a flat surface, such as a table or low shelf, in a spot that is visible from your door and/or the street. It should be placed at a level lower than that of your eyes, but slightly higher than that of the people observing.
Lighting the Menorah:
- Light the Shamash, the candle set apart from the other eight lights at the side or the top. Traditionally, the menorah is lit from the left to the right.
- Beginning with the second night, light one candle for each night the holiday has been celebrated in addition to the Shamash.
- On the eighth night, all eight candles should be lit. Traditionally, they are arranged from right to left.
- Note: If you are using oil instead of a candle, prepare it in advance. There should be enough oil to fill each fitting about two-thirds full.
Conduct a Blessing:
After lighting the menorah, say a blessing. The blessing is traditionally done by the head of the family. The blessing should always begin with the infamous phrase, “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe…”
With the right supplies, and a little bit of knowledge, lighting a menorah is easy and fun. It’s a great way to bring some light and love into your home during the holiday. Follow these steps and you’ll be able to light your menorah with confidence and ease.
