The lighting of the Menorah is one of the most important traditions of the Jewish Festival of Hanukkah. Celebrated for 8 days, the ritual of lighting the Menorah is meant to be a reminder of the great miracle that happened during that period in Jewish history. Lighting the Menorah each day in the proper order is part of the celebration of the holiday and a reminder that even in dark times, the light of faith and dedication can prevail.
Lighting a Menorah can be done in several different ways. First, take out the Menorah and arrange its arms from right to left. This is the order one should light the candles, from right to left. Place the Shamash (the helper candle) in the middle and the other 8 candles in their respective arms or in their designated holders. Consider the placement of the Menorah and its placement in the home to make sure you can light the candles in the correct order.
Now you’re ready to light the candles! To begin, light the Shamash candle first. Hold the Shamash close to the Menorah and light it from a separate, designated candle or from a long match. The Shamash should usually be slightly elevated from the other candles. After you have lit the Shamash, use it to light the first candle on the right side. Light the first candle, followed by the second, and so on, until all 8 of the Hanukkah lights are lit. Make sure to move from right to left when lighting the candles.
When you are finished, take a moment to pause and appreciate the Menorah’s beauty and the miracle it symbolizes. To enhance this experience, recite the traditional blessing you say each night of lighting: “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light.” As you are saying the blessing, raise both hands above the Menorah.
Lighting the Hanukkah Menorah is one of the most important rituals of the holiday of Hanukkah. The lighting of each candle is a reminder of the great miracle that happened during that period in Jewish history and is an important way to celebrate the holiday.
