How To Light The Menorah For Hanukkah
Step 1: Gather The Supplies
There are a few items you’ll need to light a Menorah:
- A Menorah. Traditionally, this is a nine-candle lamp, although many variations are available, including Menorahs with electric candles.
- Hanukkah Candles. Nine candles in total, eight to light every night plus an extra one, called the Shamash, to light the other candles with.
- A Matches or Lighter. For safety reasons, use only matches or a lighter specifically made for lighting a Menorah.
Step 2: Place The Menorah
Lighting the Menorah is a special ritual that should be done in a place that is easy to reach and within view. Traditionally, the Menorah is placed in the window, so that the light shines outwards and others can see it.
Step 3: Light The Candles
The candles should be lit in the same order each night. On the first night of Hanukkah, just one candle is lit in the rightmost holder. This candle is known as the Shamash. It should be lit first with the matches or lighter. Then use the Shamash to light the second candle starting from the right. On the second night, light the Shamash first and then two candles in total, from right to left. Continue lighting additional candles in the same way until all the candles are lit on the eighth night.
Step 4: Recite The Blessing
After you’ve lit the candles, take a few moments to recite the traditional blessing:
“Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Hanukkah lights.”
Hanukkah is a beautiful and meaningful holiday that should be celebrated with care. With a few simple steps, lighting the Menorah can be an enjoyable part of the celebration for everyone. May your holiday be one filled with joy and peace.
