The celebration of Hanukkah dates all the way back to the second century BCE and has been celebrated for centuries. But when was the first Hanukkah celebrated?
The first Hanukkah celebrated was in 165 BCE, at the end of the Maccabean Revolt. During this revolt, the Maccabees, a Jewish group of warriors, reclaimed the holy temple in Jerusalem from the Syrian-Greeks, who had taken control of the holy land. At this time, the temple had become severely desecrated by the oppressors, leaving the Jewish people desperate to restore it.
The Maccabees were successful in reclaiming the temple and began to rededicate it to God. However, there was only enough oil left for the temple’s menorah, a seven-branched candle-holder, to light for one day. But, miraculously, it lit for eight days – the time needed for new oil to be prepared.
In remembrance of this miracle, Hanukkah is celebrated as an eight-day festival. It is a time for families and communities to come together to celebrate, share treats, spin the dreidel, and light the menorah.
The miracle of the oil is an important symbol of faith and resistance that can continue to be passed down from generation to generation. Celebrating Hanukkah is a reminder of the Maccabees’ victory and its power to build up faith to carry on in triumph.
Hanukkah is a time for families and communities to come together to remember this miracle. The holiday is a reminder of a long history of triumph and joy, and the beauty of the holiday is celebrating generations of faith.
