Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that honors the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem by the Maccabees in the 2nd century BC. It is often referred to as the Festival of Lights and celebrated by lighting a menorah for eight days. While many may recognize Hanukkah and even celebrate it, the origins of the holiday and where it originated are not as commonly known.
What is Hanukkah?
Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday that is celebrated for eight days, is based on the historical victory of the Maccabees in response to persecution of Jews and the desecration of the Temple of Jerusalem in the 2nd century BC. The holiday commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem, where the Maccabees re-instituted Jewish religious practices.
The Origin of Hanukkah
The origin of Hanukkah can be traced back to the aftermath of the Maccabean revolt, when the Temple was destroyed by the Greek-Syrians in an effort to oppress the Jewish population and erase their religion. The Maccabees, led by Judah Maccabee, were successful in restoring the Temple and defending Jerusalem against much stronger forces. It was then that Hanukkah was declared a holiday and the rededication of the Temple was celebrated.
Elements of the Holiday
Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days in the months of Kislev or Tevet, which often falls in November or December. As part of the holiday celebration, the menorah, or the nine-branched candelabrum is lit each day with a ritual known as the “blessings of Hanukkah”. Furthermore, special foods such as fried latkes and sufganiya, which are Jewish fried donuts, are also prepared and eaten. The holiday is marked by family gatherings and gift-giving, while often celebrating with shared stories and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
Today, Hanukkah is celebrated by millions of Jews around the world and is a symbol of religious freedom and determination. Although many may be familiar with the traditions of the holiday, it is important to remember that Hanukkah originated from the Maccabean revolt and its significance in response to persecution and desecration of the Temple of Jerusalem.
