Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days and nights. Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of Lights and commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, which took place in the 2nd century B.C. The festival is usually celebrated by Jews around the world at the beginning of December. This year, Hanukkah begins on December 10 at sundown and ends on December 18.
Hanukkah is one of the most celebrated holidays in Judaism, and is celebrated by both religious and non-religious Jews alike. The name of the holiday derives from the Hebrew word for “dedication.” The holiday remembers the story of the Maccabees, who were a Jewish group that fought for religious freedom against the Greeks in the 2nd century BCE. After their victory, the Maccabees dedicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the celebration of Hanukkah was born. The holiday is celebrated over a period of eight nights, with each night followed by the traditional prayers, blessings, stories and acts of charity. On each night, the traditional menorah is lit with the shamash, or the helper candle. The menorah is usually placed in a window or in a public area to show others that the holiday is being celebrated. Additionally, on the first night, and sometimes the last night as well, the traditional Hanukkah service is held, which consists of prayers, blessings, and the lighting of the menorah.
On each night of Hanukkah, it is traditional to eat foods that are cooked in oil. These can range from potato pancakes (latkes) to doughnuts (sufganiyot). Other traditional foods include apples and honey to signify wishes for a sweet new year. Additionally, it is custom to exchange gifts on each night of the holiday.
Hanukkah is a time for joy, coming together, and celebration. Jews around the world come together to light the menorah, remind each other of our triumphant history, and share a festive meal with friends and family. It is a special time of year to recognize and remember the many miracles of Hanukkah, both from the distant past and those that are still taking place today.
