The last night of the eight-day Hanukkah festival is often a night where family and friends come together to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness. The celebration of the last night of Hanukkah consists of lighting the menorah, reciting the traditional blessings, eating festive foods, and playing games. The last day of Hanukkah is a time of joy and unity where Jews come together to give thanks to God.
On the last night of Hanukkah, or “Sheeric B’simcha” in Hebrew, the blessing of joy is recited together with the lighting of the Menorah. As per tradition, the Menorah is lit with eight candles, one for each day of the holiday. A ninth candle, the “Shamash”, is used to light the others and is placed higher or separately to differentiate it from the flame which stands for the Jewish people, those who kindled the light of hope.
After the lighting of the Menorah, friends and family enjoy festive foods such as latkes (potato pancakes), jelly doughnuts and sufganiyot. Additional blessings are said after the meal. Games such as the traditional “Dreidel” are also played, with each player receiving a prize of money or chocolate coins.
Before the night comes to an end, people exchange gifts with friends and family. The gift should be given wholeheartedly and completely with great love as a sign of appreciation for the families and friends who shared the joyous holiday together. As the night ends, people write a prayer in the eight-day prayer book, which is called a Sefer, to symbolize the end of the holiday.
The last night of Hanukkah is a time to be grateful and reflect on the blessings of God. It is a night of joy celebrated with family and friends coming together to light the menorah, say blessings, play games and exchange gifts. Wishing each other heartfelt blessings and gifts is a wonderful way to end the eight-day celebration. No matter where you are, Hanukkah will always bring light and warmth into our lives.
