Hanukkah is an ancient Jewish holiday commemorating a rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after Jewish forces were able to reclaim it in 165 BCE. In modern times, it is celebrated by Jews around the world for eight days. On the first day of Hanukkah, many people participate in activities that honor the miracle of the holiday and celebrate the occasion.
On the first night of Hanukkah, families gather for a festive meal. Traditional dishes are served, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly donuts), both fried in oil to represent the miraculous burning of the oil lamp in the Temple. In addition to eating, there may be singing and storytelling, or the reading of stories in books about Hanukkah and its ancient origins.
After the meal, it is traditional to light the Hanukiyah, a nine-candle menorah. This is done in a special ceremony, beginning with lighting the shammash (helper) candle and then lighting one candle for each night of Hanukkah. Prayers are said and blessings recited in Hebrew, as well as in English for those not familiar with the traditional language. This ceremony may be accompanied by more singing or storytelling.
After the candles are lit, many families like to give gifts. These gifts may include books, games, and Hanukkah gelt, which is money presented in small amounts, usually wrapped in shiny gold and blue foil.
In addition to the traditional activities, there are many ways to celebrate Hanukkah creatively. Ideas include performing acts of charity, writing and performing Hanukkah plays or skits, creating a time capsule for the future, exchanging recipes, and hosting a Hanukkah party.
Each family may have its own unique way of celebrating Hanukkah, and it doesn’t have to be traditional. Whether going by the book or breaking new ground, the most important part is spending quality time together and remembering the story and miracle of Hanukkah. Whatever activities are chosen, the first day of Hanukkah is a time to come together as a family and to celebrate the joy of the holiday.
