The Menorah is made up of 9 candles, 8 of which are for each night of Hanukkah, and the 9th candle, the Shammash (servant) candle, is used to light them. Additionally, it is traditional to place the Menorah in a window, to symbolize the miracle and to spread the powerful message of faith and freedom.
Dreidel & Gimel
A Dreidel is a 4 sided top which has a Hebrew letter on each side. The letters are an acronym for “Nes Gadol Haya Sham” – which means “A great miracle happened there”. These tops are usually used to play a traditional game of chance between 2 or more people, and the ultimate victor gets all the coins or other treats they played with. “Gimel” is a traditional confectionary item associated with Hanukkah, it is made of a thin, circular disc of dough which is then deep-fried and rolled in sugar & cinnamon.
Latkes
Latkes, or potato pancakes, are typically eaten during Hanukkah and although they are associated with many cultures, Jews around the world make them especially for this holiday. Latkes are fried in a skillet or oil and traditionally served with applesauce, sour cream or yoghurt.
Hanukkah Gelt
Hanukkah gelt are silver coins traditionally given as gifts during the holiday. The coins are either made of genuine silver or chocolate coins, which can be used to play the Dreidel game. The coins can also be donated to a charitable cause in lieu of gifts.
In conclusion, many symbols are associated with the Hanukkah festival that are used as part of the celebration. The Menorah, Dreidel & Gimel, Latkes and Hanukkah Gelt all help to create a joyous and meaningful holiday experience that is observed all around the world.
