Kwanzaa and Hanukkah are two important cultural holidays celebrated by many people around the world. Both of these holidays have very unique traditions which make them distinct, but also share many similarities. One of the similarities between these two celebrations is the symbols that are used and revered. This article will discuss the symbols that are similar for Kwanzaa and Hanukkah.
The Menorah
The menorah is a common symbol of Hanukkah and is used in the liturgy and ceremonies associated with the holiday. The menorah consists of nine branches and represents the eight nights of the Hanukkah miracle when one night, a small amount of oil burned miraculously for eight nights.
The menorah is also used as a symbol of Kwanzaa. The seven Takarra are the seven principles of Kwanzaa, representing the best of African heritage and shared values amongst African people around the world. The Takarra are placed atop a candelabra with seven candles which resembles the menorah.
Colours and Clothes
The colours that are associated with Kwanzaa are black, red and green, which are the traditional pan-African colours. The colours are used in clothing, decorations and other festivities associated with the holiday. Red symbolizes the struggle and suffering that African people have endured, black symbolizes strength and pride, and green for the hope and future of African people.
The colour blue is associated with Hanukkah. The shade of blue is called ‘techelet’ and is found in tallit – Jewish ritual prayer shawls – and other decorations. There are also specially designed outfits for men known as a ‘kittel,’ and for women called the ‘vatteke’ to wear during Hanukkah.
Food
For Hanukkah, many celebrants enjoy traditional fried foods such as latkes, or potato pancakes, which are cooked in oil to commemorate the miracle of the oil.
In Kwanzaa celebrations, foods are prepared in a variety of ways including the traditional African way, as well as adapted to the likes of the individuals and families celebrating. No matter what the food is, it is important that it is cooked and served with love as it reflects the values of Kwanzaa.
Both Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are important celebrations that recognize the shared values and cultures of the people and families who observe them. The symbols from each of the holidays help to better understand the importance of the holiday and generate a sense of solidarity amongst its celebrants. No matter the differences or similarities between the two, both are valued and commemorate the triumph and strength of people and their future.
