Instructions
Step 1: Gather The Supplies
You will need a menorah or Chanukiyah, which is the nine-branched holder for the candles. You may use a Hanukkah candle set, which includes the candles, a special holder, wicks as well as a holder for a m’aamad, a special piece of paper that is placed in the center of the menorah. You may also choose to purchase a menorah, candles and wicks separately.
Step 2: Place the Menorah
The menorah should be placed at a place of honor, such as the dining room table or the window sill where it can be seen from the street. Place it on the left side of the room in a place where it will be safe from being bumped or blow away.
Step 3: Insert The Candles
Once the menorah has been placed, the candles can be inserted. Insert the Shamash (the helper candle) into the center holder. Have the shamash placed higher than the other eight candles. Count off eight holders from right to left and place one candle in each of them. Before doing this, you may light the Shamash.
Step 4: Place The M’aamad
If you are using a Hanukkah candle set, a m’aamad is included. This is an extra piece of cardstock or paper. Place the m’aamad in the holder to the right of the shamash.
Step 5: Light The Candles
The candles need to be lit in a specific order. Begin with the Shamash and then kindle one light each night from right to left. Each night, a new candle needs to be lit and the rest of the candles should remain lit.
Following this step-by-step guide should help you place the Hanukkah candles correctly. Depending on the type of menorah you are using, the candle holders may be arranged differently. Once the candles are all lit, you are ready to celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah!
