Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday celebrated annually around the world. During Hanukkah, families light a special nine-branched candelabrum, known as the Menorah, for eight nights during the festival. Hanukkah candles play an important role in the celebration, as they represent the miraculous oil that burned for eight days despite enough only being found for one day. If you’re looking to celebrate Hanukkah the right way, here’s how to light a Hanukkah Menorah.

Instructions For Lighting Hanukkah Candles
Step One: Place The Menorah On A Table Or Hard Surface
The traditional Menorah has nine branches, with eight branches used to light candles and one additional branch for the shamash or the leader candle. Place the Menorah on a flat surface so it can stand safely and securely.
Step Two: Place One Candle On Each Of The Eight Branches
The eight candles used to commemorate Hanukkah should be placed on the branches of the Menorah from right to left — this is the same way you read print. It is also the same way Hebrew is read. Make sure the shamash candle is in the center branch.
Step Three: Light The Shamash Candle
Using a match or lighter, light the shamash torch on the Menorah from right to left. This should be done before lighting any of the other eight candles.
Step Four: Light The Other Candles
Once the shamash is lit, then light the other candles. They should be lit from left to right, starting with the candle furthest to the left. This candle represents the first night of Hanukkah. As you move on to the following nights, continue lighting the next candle to the right.
Step Five: Bless The Candle
Before you can light the following night’s candle, you must say a special blessing of thanks. This blessing should be said in Hebrew and translated into English. The order is: Blessings, thanks, and praises. After saying the blessing, light the remaining candles with the shamash, then recite the blessing again for each night of Hanukkah.
Step Six: Celebrate
Once all the candles are lit, you can begin celebrating Hanukkah! Hanukkah is a wonderful holiday and a special time of the year that celebrates family, friends, and faith. Make sure to spend time with your family on each night of the holiday and share delicious Hanukkah treats like latkes and jelly donuts.
Lighting a Hanukkah Menorah is a special and meaningful tradition that helps bring families and friends closer together. It is also an important tradition that allows each person to pay homage to their faith and to remember the miracle of the oil burning for eight days. Lighting the menorah is a time honored tradition that has been passed down through generations, and it can bring a spiritual unity and lasting joy to any family gathering.
