Hanukkah is a festive Jewish holiday which is celebrated for 8 days every year in the winter. It is also known as Chanukah, and is observed by Jews around the world. The holiday commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem where a miracle of one-day’s worth of oil lasting eight days occurred. Over the eight-day holiday, a total of eight candles are lit in a special menorah called a Hanukkiah, and the festivities involve food, family and religious traditions.
Hanukkah is a joyful holiday that is widely celebrated in Jewish communities around the world. One of the main rituals associated with this holiday involves lighting the Hanukiah. On the first night, one candle is lit and this is then followed by lighting another candle each of the succeeding seven nights. On the ninth night, the Shamash (servant) candle is used to light the rest of the candles. After saying a special blessing, the candles are then rearranged following a specific sequence of movements. In addition to the lighting of the Hanukiah, celebrants also partake in festive meals throughout the holiday. Obesity foods are the traditional fare, such as latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) and kugel (a baked pudding). Other special Hanukkah dishes that may be served include brisket, chicken wings, or a unique meat dish, such as cholent.
On the first night of Hanukkah, many people also play a game called dreidel, which is traditionally played with a four-sided spinning top. The top is inscribed with Hebrew letters. During the game, each player takes a turn spinning the dreidel, and when the dreidel lands the player either gets a reward or has to contribute something.
Hanukkah is a meaningful holiday celebrated with joy and enthusiasm, where family members get together to join in celebrating with religious traditions and festivities. While the precise ways of celebrating have changed over the years, the significance and spirit of the holiday remains-to remember the miracle associated with the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It is a time to be thankful for all of the blessings that we are so fortunate to receive throughout the year.
