Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrated around the world every year. The holiday commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting the menorah, a candle-holder with nine holders that represent the eight days of light in the Temple. The ninth holder, called the shamash, is used to light the other candles. In addition to lighting the Menorah, families celebrate Hanukkah by playing dreidel, exchanging gifts, and eating traditional Hanukkah foods.
Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting the Menorah for 8 days. Lighting the Menorah is a way of honoring the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days, while only having enough oil for 1 day. On each night of Hanukkah, a new candle is added to the Menorah, beginning from right to left. After lighting the menorah, the blessings are recited and a prayer is said. After the ceremony, families and friends get together to eat traditional foods like potato pancakes, cheese pancakes, and jelly doughnuts. Besides the Menorah, Dreidel is one of the main symbols of Hanukkah. The four sided top has Hebrew initials Nun, Gimel, Hay, Shin are an acronym of the saying “A Great Miracle Happened Here”. People play Dreidel for sweets or coins depending of the country’s culture. The winner of the game will take all or a portion of what all the players have wagered. While the games and meals are enjoyed, it is also common for family members to exchange gifts. Small gifts such as books, toys and small gadgets are given out as a show of appreciation and love.Hanukkah is a special holiday for the Jewish community, usually celebrated with joy and camaraderie amongst family and friends. From the lighting of the menorah, to the delicious traditional desserts and the game of dreidels, it is definitely the season of celebration and joy. The celebration of Hanukkah also continues to remind us of an important lesson in perseverance and faith during times of adversity. Lastly, the exchange of gifts amongst family and friends is a wonderful way to show love and appreciation for one another.
