Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an important Jewish holiday that is celebrated by people of the Jewish faith around the world. It commemorates the miracle of a small group of Jews, known as the Maccabees, who overcame their oppressors and regained control of Jerusalem in 165 BC. The holiday is celebrated by lighting candles, playing games, eating traditional foods, giving gifts and more. The holiday also serves to remind people of the strength of the Jewish people and their ability to survive despite unbelievable odds.
Hanukkah is an eight-day holiday that is celebrated each year, beginning on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. The most recognized symbol of Hanukkah is the Menorah, a nine-branched candelabra. Each night of the holiday, an additional candle is lit in the Menorah. This stands as a reminder of the miracle that occurred in Jerusalem many years ago. According to Jewish tradition, when the Maccabees recaptured the holy Temple, they found that only one small jar of oil remained. Miraculously, this small jar of oil lasted for eight days, until new oil could be prepared. To honor the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days, people light candles in the Menorah for eight days during the holiday. In addition to the lighting of candles, Hanukkah is celebrated with special prayers, traditional foods and various games. One of the most popular Hanukkah games is the Dreidel game. During this game, a spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each of its four sides is spun. Depending on which letter is facing up when it lands, the players collect or give away a certain amount of coins for the game. Some people also exchange gifts during the holiday as a way to commemorate the miracle of the Maccabees.
Hanukkah is an important holiday for the Jewish people as it serves to bring the community together with a spirit of celebration and joy. Each year, when the Menorah is lit, it stands as a reminder of both the courage of the Maccabees and the miracle of God’s providence. By celebrating Hanukkah, people of the Jewish faith are reminded to always stay strong and faithful no matter how trying times may be.
