Many people are curious to know if Hanukkah is mentioned in the Bible. The answer is yes, it is mentioned – briefly – but the details about it are to be found in other books of Jewish scripture. Although there is some debate as to its origin, Hanukkah can be traced back to one of the most important events in Jewish history.
The story of Hanukkah is found in the books of Maccabees, which is not part of the official Hebrew canon but it is traditionally considered part of the apocrypha. The books of Maccabees tell the story of the Jewish rebellion in the 2nd century BC, led by the Maccabees, against the Greek-Syrian Seleucid Empire. The revolt lasted for several years, eventually leading to a resounding victory for the Maccabees.
The event that is celebrated during Hanukkah is known as the Miracle of the Oil. According to the legend, when the Maccabees rededicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after their victory, there was only enough pure oil to fuel the menorah for one day. Miraculously, it burned for eight days, thus allowing the Temple service to be resumed.
Although the books of Maccabees tell the whole story, it is briefly mentioned in the Bible too. The books of Daniel and I Maccabees mention the decisive battle of the Maccabees, while the books of Nehemiah, Ezra, and II Maccabees recount the miraculous event of the oil and the rededication of the Temple. However, the Bible does not refer to this event as “Hanukkah”.
Hanukkah is an important festival for Jews around the world. Although its origin can be traced back to the books of Maccabees, it is briefly mentioned in the Bible as well. The books of Daniel, Nehemiah, Ezra, I Maccabees and II Maccabees tell the story of a brave Jewish revolt and the miraculous event of the oil. This event is celebrated today on the holiday of Hanukkah.
