Hanukkah is a time-honored Jewish tradition that celebrates the miracle of the oil lasting eight nights instead of one. As part of this celebration, each night one or more Hanukkah candles are lit alongside traditional prayers. Knowing when to light the candles is an important part of the Hanukkah celebration.
When Should Hanukkah Candles Be Lit?
The first night of Hanukkah usually falls on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev, which usually corresponds to late November or early December according to the Gregorian calendar. To be precise, Hanukkah candles should be lit immediately after sunset on that night. This is the first of the eight nights of Hanukkah, and it is customary to light an extra candle—called the shamash—for use in kindling the other eight.
Order of Candle Lighting
On subsequent nights, the candle lighting begins with the shamash, then progresses to the left. During the first night of Hanukkah, one candle is lit. On the second night, two candles are lit, and so on until the eighth night, when all eight of the Hanukkah lights are burning. Each night after the blessing over the candles is said, several Hanukkah songs and prayers are typically shared by all who are gathered.
Reciting Blessings
Before candles are lit, blessings are typically recited. On the first night of Hanukkah, a longer blessing is recited. Subsequent nights, a shorter blessing is said. Candles should not be lit until after the blessing has been said.
On each night of Hanukkah, a different type of treat is enjoyed by those celebrating. Different communities have their own customs of which foods to enjoy during the holiday. Fried foods such as donuts and latkes are popular options.
Hanukkah is a beloved holiday that celebrates Jewish identity and faith. Understanding when to light the candles is an important part of the celebration. Hanukkah candles should be lit immediately after sunset on the first night of Hanukkah, with additional candles added each night working to the left. Reciting blessings follows the lighting of each candle. Celebrating Hanukkah with friends and family is also a popular tradition.
