Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday widely celebrated by Jews around the world. It is a celebration of the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, and dates back to 168 BCE. One of the main components of the Hanukkah celebration is the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah or hannukiah, which holds 8 candles and 1 shamash. Lighting the Hanukkah menorah is an important ritual that happens daily during the festival of Hanukkah.
The Hanukkah candle lighting ritual begins with the shamash (servant) candle, which is placed in the center of the hannukiah. This candle is used to light all of the other candles for the night. Each night, one additional candle is lit from right to left until all eight candles are lit on the eighth night. The shamash is lit first to show that it is the source of light for all other candles.
To begin, the person lighting the candles says the blessings for the night. There a few different versions of these blessings but they all begin with “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light”. After the blessings are said, the person lighting the candles takes the shamash and lights it with a traditional flame, either a long match or a lighter. From there the shamash candle is used to light the other candles from right to left.
The Hanukkah menorah should be placed in a window or doorway which is visible from the outside so that others can see it and join in the celebration of the holiday. The candle lighting is a special moment in the celebration of Hanukkah as light is seen to symbolize freedom and liberation. This is especially true in the Jewish faith, and is a reminder of the miracle of the oil that lasted for 8 days when lighting the Temple.
The Hanukkah candles are lit to remind us of the miracle of the Maccabees and keep the story of Hanukkah alive. Hanukkah is a time to celebrate light over darkness and recognize that good can always triumph over evil. Lighting the Hanukkah candles is an important ritual that celebrates the joy and beauty of freedom and should be done with much reverence and appreciation.
