The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the miracle of a small amount of oil lasting for eight days and nights when the Jews had liberated Jerusalem from the Syrian-Greeks. It is observed every year for 8 days from the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar which usually falls in November or December on the Gregorian calendar. During the holiday, the Jewish people celebrate their freedom to practice their religion and the miracle of the oil. To commemorate and celebrate the holiday, people exchange greetings of “Happy Hanukkah” with friends, family, and associates.
Hanukkah is usually celebrated shortly after Thanksgiving in the United States, so many of us are familiar with the holiday due to its proximity to Christmas. One of the main symbols of Hanukkah is the menorah, a nine-branched candelabra that is lit with eight candles. Thus, the Jewish people light a Hanukkah menorah each night of the holiday, with all of the candles burning by the eighth night. Since the holiday is a celebration of togetherness, religious freedom, and renewal, many people wish friends and family a “Happy Hanukkah” during the eight days of the holiday.
Out of respect and politeness, it’s important to extend joyful Hanukkah wishes to those around you. Jews regard Hanukkah as an occasion to give heartfelt greetings to those around them, so the appropriate way to wish someone a “Happy Hanukkah” is to say it to them in person. It is then customary to light the Hanukkah candles together, recite blessings, and eat traditional Hanukkah treats such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly donuts made with fried dough). You could also send an electronic communication with Hanukkah wishes if that is more convenient.
All in all, it is courteous and respectful to extend greetings of “Happy Hanukkah” to those near and far. Expressing good wishes during the holiday season is a way to help nurture and spread joy and peace to others. Community is an integral part of the Hanukkah celebration, and extending warm wishes to those around us, be it through physical or digital contact, is the perfect way to ensure a Happy Hanukkah to all.
