Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish observance that celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. One of the ways that this holiday is celebrated is through the kindling of the Hanukkah lights. The candle for Hanukkah is called a menorah.
The traditional menorah for Hanukkah is made up of nine candle branches, one for each day of the holiday. At the outset, the centermost candle—called the shamash, or servant light—is lit. Then a candle is lit on the far right, representing the first night of Hanukkah. Each night, the shamash is used to light an additional candle from right to left, representing a new day of the holiday. Each night during the festival of Hanukkah, the menorah is lit with its corresponding lighting ritual. It’s customary to recite certain blessings during the lighting, and special prayers may also be recited before and/or after the lighting. Depending on the level of engagement with traditional and religious observance, families may incorporate more blessings or prayers before and/or after the lighting of the menorah.
The menorah is lit in a specific order each day of Hanukkah. On the first night, the shamash candle is lit and one additional candle is added to the far right of the menorah. On the second night, the shamash is lit and two additional candles are added to the right of the menorah. This continues on for all eight nights of Hanukkah.
Since the menorah is lit to represent each night of Hanukkah, it serves an important symbolic function in learning about the holiday and celebrating its festivities. The full menorah is often a beautiful and decorative centerpiece for the dining and living room areas of many Jewish homes.
The candle for Hanukkah is called a menorah and it is used to commemorate and celebrate this special holiday. The light of the menorah symbolizes the way that the Maccabee family and their followers brought a joy and light back into the world by winning their battle and rededicating the Second Temple. With its eight branches, the menorah is a bright beacon for each night of Hanukkah, and is a timeless tradition that is meaningful to many Jewish people.
