Today, Hanukkah is celebrated with the lighting of one candle each night, for 8 nights. But what exactly is a Hanukkah candle?
A Hanukkah candle is a candle that is specifically used in the traditional lighting of the holiday Menorah. The Menorah is a nine-branched candelabrum that is lit in memory of the miracle of oil that happened when the Jews defeated the Greco-Syrians 2,000 years ago. The eight candles of the Menorah represent the days that the oil burned in the temple needing only one day’s worth.
The Hanukkah candle is typically a wick in a one-piece, beeswax candle, and usually have one-hour of burning time. All eight candles should be the same, and should be lit starting from the right side. Traditional Hanukkah candles are also made of paraffin or vegetable wax.
The most important part of the Hanukkah lighting ceremony is the recitation of special blessings. The blessings give thanks to God for helping the Israelites overcome their oppressors and rejoice in the miraculous eight days of light.
In addition to the eight Hanukkah candles, there is usually a ninth candle which is the “shamash”, or “serving” candle that is used to light the other eight on each night of the festival.
Modern Hanukkah candles come in all shapes and sizes and some may include spinning tops and even whistles. For many experienced candle-lighting participants, however, lighting with the traditional Hanukkah candles is preferred.
Hanukkah candles are an integral part of the Hanukkah holiday. For eight nights each year, Jews around the world gather together to celebrate the miracle of the oil and its eight days of light. Each night they light the Menorah, a special type of candelabrum, with the prescribed Hanukkah candles to remind them of the miracle.
Lighting the Hanukkah candles is a time-honored tradition that brings families together in celebration and gratitude. Although the candles may have changed over the years, the symbolic act of lighting it remains the same and its meaning remains strong.
