Hanukkah is an important holiday in Jewish culture and celebrated around the world. This year it begins at sundown on December 10th and ends on the evening of December 18th which is known as the 8th day of Hanukkah. For Hanukkah, many traditions are followed including lighting the Menorah, eating latkes and donuts, and exchanging presents. So, what day is it today for Hanukkah?
Today is the 6th day of Hanukkah. As we celebrate the lighting of the Menorah, it is important to remember the miracle of Hanukkah. During this 8-day holiday, the Maccabees were able to defeat the powerful Syrian-Greek Empires by relying on a miracle. It is said that when the Maccabees found the temple, it was only enough oil to light the menorah for one night. Miraculously, the oil lasted 8 days in a row. To commemorate this event, we light the Menorah for 8 days and it is traditional to give gifts for each of those days.
Lighting the Menorah
Each day of Hanukkah, a new candle is added to the Menorah. On the first night, one candle is lit and on the last night, all 8 candles are lit, symbolizing the miracle of oil that lasted 8 days. The Shamash, or the middle candle is lit first and used to light the rest of the candles.
Symbolic Meaning
- The Menorah lights represent the spiritual enlightenment that began with the Maccabees.
- Each candle is a reminder of the 8 days of light during the miracle.
- It is a time for families to reunite and be thankful for each other and their belief.
- It celebrates the struggle and resilience of the Jewish people against evil.
Eating Latkes and Donuts
Eating traditional foods on Hanukkah is a time-honored tradition. Latkes, or potato pancakes, are one of the most popular Hanukkah dishes. These fried delicacies symbolize the oil that stayed lit when the Maccabees freed the temple. They are usually served with applesauce or sour cream. Jelly donuts are also eaten on Hanukkah as another reminder of the miracle of the oil.
Today is an important day in the celebration of Hanukkah. It is the 6th night of Hanukkah and a time of reflecting on the miracle of the oil that lasted 8 days. We celebrate by lighting the Menorah, eating traditional delicacies, and exchanging gifts. We also join in the spirit of togetherness and joy that sits at the heart of Hanukkah for everyone around the world.
