Hanukkah is a Jewish festival of lights that spans 8 days every year from around the 25th of Kislev, which is on the Hebrew calendar. During this 8 day period, the candles of the Hanukkah menorah are lit to commemorate the miracle of oil that lasted 8 days in the ancient Temple of Jerusalem. Each night, 1 additional candle is lit until the 8th night when all 8 candles are lit in honor of the miracle. For some, this makes it difficult to remember which day of Hanukkah it is, so here is a guide that explains how to know what day Hanukkah is it.

Check the Date
Determine When Hanukkah Starts
Every year, Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of Kislev, which is determined on the Hebrew calendar. The Gregorian calendar (the one most commonly used in the United States and Canada) is based on solar years and lunar months so the day that Hanukkah starts may differ in the Hebrew and Gregorian calendars.
Determine the Day on the Hebrew Calendar
Once you have determined when Hanukkah starts according to the Gregorian calendar, you can determine the exact day on the Hebrew calendar. Each day of Hanukkah starts at sundown so if a person looks at their Hebrew calendar, they are looking for the sunset of the day of the 25th Kislev.
Count the Days
Know What Day Hanukkah Is It
The day is determined by counting the days since the start of Hanukkah. For example, the second night of Hanukkah would start on sundown of the first day of Hanukkah. The third night of Hanukkah would start on sundown of the second day of Hanukkah and so on.
Know When Each Candle Is Lit
The day of Hanukkah can also be determined by looking at the candles of the Hanukkah menorah. The menorah is lit with 8 candles, with one additional candle lit each night of Hanukkah. On the first night, only one candle is lit and on the eighth night, all 8 candles are lit.
By following these guidelines, anyone with basic knowledge of the Hebrew calendar and the Hanukkah menorah can easily determine the day of Hanukkah. While Hanukkah is celebrated for 8 days, each day can bring it’s own special meaning and customs as we celebrate the miracle of oil and the victory of Jewish people. With the traditional customs of lighting the menorah and enjoying all types of Hanukkah dishes, this is a very special time for Jewish people around the world.
