Hanukkah is a traditional Jewish holiday celebrated each year around the world. During the eight days of Hanukkah, Jews commemorate the Maccabean Revolt and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. Hanukkah is a joyous celebration that typically involves the lighting of candles on a special candelabrum called a menorah, prayers, eating special treats, and playing games.
The 8 nights of Hanukkah begin on the 25th day of Kislev, a Hebrew month that usually corresponds to some part of November or December. On the first night, the shamus is lit as a blessing and prayer is recited. The shamus is then used to light one candle which is placed on the menorah. On each night of the holiday an additional candle is added until all eight candles are lit. It is during this time that the story of Hanukkah is told and many of the customs and their significance are explained. The first candle on the menorah is called the shamus or “servant” and all the other candles are referred to as “neshamos” or “souls”. Each candle represents something special and commemorates one element of the Hanukkah celebration. Here are some of the traditional symbolism and significance associated with each of the 8 nights of Hanukkah:
Table of Contents
The First Night
The first night of Hanukkah is the biggest and most special. On this night, the shamus candle is placed in the center of the menorah, and one flame is lit to begin the 8 night celebration. The shamus represents the special relationship between God and the people of Israel, and we celebrate this bond during the holiday.
The Second Night
The second night of Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The Jewish people were able to take their homeland back from a foreign empire, and they celebrated by lighting a second flame on the menorah.
The Third Night
The third night celebrates the Maccabees’ victory over King Antiochus’ soldiers. This victory marks the first time the Jewish people regained political autonomy and self-rule.
The Fourth Night
The fourth night is the celebration of the first recorded miracle of Hanukkah. According to the Talmud, when the Temple was rededicated, there was only enough oil to keep the menorah burning for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days.
The Fifth Night
The fifth night of Hanukkah is when we celebrate Jewish identity and the strength of the Jewish people. It represents our perseverance and resistance throughout our long history of struggle and oppression.
The Sixth Night
The sixth night is an opportunity to take some time to reflect on the history and customs of the holiday. Many Jews take this time to tell the stories and educate the younger generations about the importance of Hanukkah.
The Seventh Night
The seventh night of Hanukkah is the celebration of a physical and spiritual renewal. We light all seven flames on the menorah and take this time to remember our ancestors and their sacrifices.
The Eighth Night
The eighth and final night of the Hanukkah holiday is known as “Zos Chanukah” or “the day of Hanukkah”. On this night, all eight candles are lit and we celebrate the rededication of the Temple with joy and prayer. We also make special treats, dance, sing, and exchange gifts.
The 8 nights of Hanukkah are a time to remember the struggles and victories of the Jewish people. Through lighting candles and singing traditional songs, traditional stories, and prayers, we honor and commemorate the miracles of Hanukkah and the dedication of the Temple. Hanukkah is a joyous occasion that reminds us of our strong identity and history and allows us to be thankful for the past and look forward to a bright future.
