Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated to commemorate the rededication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. It lasts for eight days, and is celebrated by lighting a Menorah, exchanging gifts, spinning the dreidel, and singing Hanukkah songs. Menorah
The Menorah is the traditional Hanukkah candelabrum that is lit each night of the eight day holiday. It has nine branches, and one branch is higher than the other eight. On the first night, one of the eight day Candles are lit, and on each night after, the flame of the extra candle, or shamash, is used to light the additional candle. During the eight days, additional blessings are said while the candles are lit.
Exchanging Gifts
Giving gifts is a popular Hanukkah tradition, usually accompanied with chocolate coins, known as gelt, given to children. It is customary for family members to exchange meaningful gifts and many purchase Hanukkah themed presents. ʻ
Spinning the Dreidel
The dreidel is a four-sided spinning top that has a Hebrew letter on each side. It is also known as a “sevivon” in Yiddish. Traditionally, children will use a dreidel while playing a game with family and friends. Each side of the top has a letter that stands for the Yiddish phrase “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham,” which meaning “A great miracle happened there.”
Hanukkah Music
Each night of Hanukkah, Jews sing popular Hanukkah songs such as “Ma’Oz Tzur,” which is about a “rock of ages.” Other Hanukkah songs include “Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah,” “Sivivon Sov Sov Sov,” and “Mi Yimalel.”
