Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an 8 day long celebration that celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple. Commemorated each year on the 25th day of Kislev on the Jewish calendar, it is celebrated with the lighting of candles, singing songs, and family gatherings.
Hanukkah marks a crucial event in Jewish history, the victory of the Maccabees over the oppressive forces of Antiochus IV who desecrated the Temple and forbid the Jewish people from practicing their religion. In the 2nd century BCE, the Maccabees fought against their conquerors and regained control of Jerusalem, soon rededicating the Temple and rediscovering the menorah, a lamp made of 7 branches. It is believed that the menorah was miraculously lit with only enough oil to keep it burning for one night, yet it burnt for 8 nights – one of the many miracles of Hanukkah.
