Every year, Jews around the world light the Menorah, the nine-branched candelabra, in celebration of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. One of the key rituals during Hanukkah is the lighting of the candles during the week-long observance. Hanukkah is one of the most celebrated and joyous of Jewish holidays. As such, it’s important to understand the custom of lighting the Menorah – how to put Hanukkah candles on the correct way.
The Hanukkah Menorah, also known as the Hanukiah, is traditionally lit in and around a home. On each night of Hanukkah, a single candle is lit from left to right. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the Shamash candle (the ninth candle) is elevated, usually above or to the side of the other eight candles. Here’s how to put Hanukkah candles correctly on the Menorah:
Light the Shamash First
Before lighting any of the Menorah’s other eight candles, light the Shamash. This candle is the “servant” candle and is usually placed in the center of the Menorah or slightly above the other eight candles. The Shamash candle should be lit first every night, using a match or, if one is available, a Hanukkah lighter. After the Shamash candle has been lit, it is used to light the other eight candles. Each night, light the candle(s) for that evening from left to right.
Lighting the Chanukkiah
When lighting the Chanukkiah Menorah, the correct direction to light is from left to right, in the same direction as Hebrew is read. Since this is the tradition, it is important to bear this in mind when putting candles on the Hanukiah. Many people opt to light their Menorah facing away from them, towards the window or doorway, since this is a way to publicize the Mitzvah of lighting the Chanukkiah.
Blessing During Candle Lighting
On the first night of Hanukkah, the Jewish blessing that is traditionally said during candle lighting is:
- Blessed are You, our G-d, King of the Universe, who made miracles for our forefathers at this time of year.
On each night following the first night, a shortened version of the blessing is said, which is:
- Blessed are You, our G-d, King of the Universe, who performs miracles for us every day.
Lighting the Menorah is one of the most important parts of Hanukkah and a wonderful family tradition that everyone can take part in. In order to correctly light the Menorah, it’s important to remember the correct way to place the candles – light the Shamash first, then the other candles from left to right facing away from you, and recite blessings. But most importantly, take a moment to reflect on the message and joy of Hanukkah during this ritual.
