Happy Hanukkah is one of the most important religious holidays celebrated by Jewish people around the world in December or January of each year. Depending on a person’s beliefs, the mention of Hanukkah can be anywhere from a very special greeting to a formal acknowledgement of the season. Knowing when to say Happy Hanukkah is an important part of honoring the observance of the holiday.

During the 8-day Festival of Hanukkah

The eight-day celebration of Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar. It is usually sometime between mid-November and the end of December on the western calendar, depending on the year. During the eight-day celebration, it is traditional to light candles at night on a special menorah and to give gifts each night in accordance with Jewish custom. People will say “Happy Hanukkah” to each other during this time. In the synagogue, special prayers and blessings are said during the service.

Beginning the Evening Before Hanukkah

The actual celebration of Hanukkah begins after the sun has set on the night before the first day, which is called Erev Hanukkah. This is generally referred to as the beginning of the holiday, even though technically it is not part of the 8-day observance. People may exchange greetings of “Happy Hanukkah” with each other in anticipation of the holiday.

Happy Hanukkah Year-Round

People may say “Happy Hanukkah” at any time throughout the year, with the understanding that it will most likely not be celebrated for another several months. This greeting does not promote celebration of the holiday out of its traditional time, but rather offers an acknowledgement of the celebratory spirit that Hanukkah embodies. Even when not celebrated, the spirit of Hanukkah remains strong throughout the year.
Saying “Happy Hanukkah” during the 8-day celebration of the holiday is an important part of sharing in the joy associated with the festival. During Erev Hanukkah, the evening before the first day, people may also wish each other “Happy Hanukkah” in anticipation of the holiday. At any time of year, saying “Happy Hanukkah” can be an acknowledgement of the spirit and joy of the holiday without necessarily endorsing its observance.
