Hanukkah is a Jewish festival that is celebrated every year to commemorate the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It is a traditional eight-day holiday which begins on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev. Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Maccabean Jews over the Seleucid Empire and the establishment of religious freedom and autonomy. Its name literally means “dedication” in Hebrew. Each year, the holiday of Hanukkah is observed by lighting the menorah and performing special rituals and prayers. Hanukkah also involves exchanging gifts, playing games and eating traditional food such as latkes and sufganiyot. But just like any other Jewish holiday, it needs to come to an end at some point. The question is – when did Hanukkah end?
Hanukkah usually lasts for eight days. It starts on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev and ends on the 2nd day of the following month, Tevet. The first night of Hanukkah is celebrated with the traditional lighting of the Menorah – the nine-branched candelabrum in which a single flame is kindled for each of the eight nights. On the last night, traditionally called Zos Chanukah, all eight candles are lit. Following this, the blessings are said, the prayers are recited, and the traditional Hanukkah songs are sung.
In some places, the end of Hanukkah is marked by a special ceremony on the 7th night, in which two people are chosen to escort the Menorah to a place where it will be extinguished. In other places, the Menorah is simply extinguished by the eldest male of the family or by covering the flames with a cloth.
In the United States, the holiday of Hanukkah ends on the 8th day of Kislev, which is the last day of the festival. Jews in communities outside the US may observe different customs and continue celebrating Hanukkah for an additional day or two.
It’s easy to determine when exactly Hanukkah ends – it takes place on the 8th day of Kislev, according to the Jewish calendar. However, the way it is celebrated can vary depending on local customs and traditions – some might light the Menorah for seven days or eight days, while others might go on for a longer period of time. No matter what the custom is, however, the end of Hanukkah is a cause for celebration, as it marks the transition from the holy days of the holiday back to the ordinary days of the year.
No matter how you celebrate Hanukkah, it is a time to celebrate religious freedom and remember our past. Taking a moment to light the Menorah is a reminder of the miraculous victory of the Maccabean Jews against the Seleucid Empire and the restoration of the Temple. It is also a time of joy and giving, and it’s important to remember the true meaning of the holiday season and the spirit of Hanukkah.
